Diving in and around Vava'u
Diving in Vava'u around your resort is truly spectacular with crystal clear waters that enjoy visibility averaging down to 30-metres (98 feet).
The water is warm all year which is a major bonus and there is an incredible variety of diving in this small group of magnificent islands. Topographically, the islands of Vava'u offer stunning underwater caverns and cave systems, where divers can surface in different chambers, and encounter the marine life that inhabit these areas.
Vava'u offers a vast array of year round diving for all levels and experiences. You can easily find magnificent hard corals that truly are untouched, and soft coral gardens in a breath-taking myriad of colours, plus one of the best Gorgonia fan (also known as sea whips or sea fans) dives in the South Pacific. Mandarin Fish and Seahorses have also been located in the main harbor.
There are a number of unique caves, spectacular underwater archways, and the 122m wreck of the Clan McWilliam which sank more than 80 years ago but is still sitting upright and intact. The beautiful old copra steamer sank in the 1920's with brass portholes, mast and crows nest still in place. The wreck is teaming with bat angelfish, and snappers galore. Legend has it that the Captain and Chief engineer went down with her. Some say as they descend onto the upper deck they can feel the presence of the Captain watching over his mighty ship.
Dive Vava'u and Dolphin Pacific Diving are all experienced operators with shops located in the local township of Neiafu. They all offer competitive prices and will pick you up and drop you off from our jetty at ‘The Tongan’.
Snorkelling in Vava'u
The beach is safe for swimming and snorkelling at any tide.
The best snorkelling is at the entrance of our resort. While it may lack in coral it makes up in varieties of small fish. Snorkelling gear is complimentary to house guests and is available from the office.
A variety of snorkeling sites are available and with the crystal clear waters that surround some of the islands, it is an ideal opportunity for people to discover the marine life. We can arrange a magical day out with our local guide Niva Maukaloa, where he will take you to uninhabitated islands and snorkel spots that will make your friends green with envy.
We strongly recommend a waterproof housing for your digital camera as most of the sea life is within a few metres from the surface and the colours of the coral and fish aren't lost to lack of sunlight.
